PostSubject: Bin Laden Dead   Mon 02 May 2011, 02:54

Just a few minutes ago, ABC News announced that Osama bin Laden was killed tonight; you can find further details here.

Sorry this is so short, but like I said the news only broke a couple of minutes ago.

It's a good thing, but I find it hard to be incredibly excited. Everyone's acting like this is the greatest thing since sliced bread and that it's a new era... I doubt it. Highly.

Mod Post: Topics Merged And Moved To Antidotes

I agree that the symbolism is great, but I think that we're going to be hellaciously jumpy for the next few days. Military's gone to Condition Bravo (according to CNN), and probably every sailor and soldier on short-term leave has been told to report back to their base or ship.

Don't agree with this being an antidote.

A scapegoat is (allegedly, so far) dead.

So... Hurrah? What has this achieved in the long run, exactly? It's one dude.

Because far too much importance will be placed on him. It's one guy.

Plus, I will honestly not surprised if some "Well, we got Osama now. Why are our forces still out there?" arguments start popping up.

Calling Osama's death no big deal is like calling Churchill's "Fight Them On the Beaches" speech a bunch of meaningless words.

"Fight them on the beaches" was a call to arms against an invading force.

Osama bin Laden is one guy, with nothing to him beyond a ludicrous reputation. There is no comparison here.

Enlighten me.

How does calling the death of a boogyman pointless compare with calling an address to a nation to repel an invading force pointless?

Bravo isn't really all that impressive. Fuck it, I'm breaking out the balloons.

I am honestly not following you, dude.

I'm not being confrontational, I'm asking you to explain yourself! I am not on your train of thought!

Osama is was a paper tiger, to break out the clichés. I do not beleive killing him has achieved anything beyond provide a headline. "Fight them on the beaches" was a speech given in the face of a very real prospect of invasion.

I do not get your comparison!

Please, tell me what you mean!

Leaving out the attacks on 9/11 and anything else after that, Osama can be definitively connected to:

- The 1993 World Trade Center bombing
- The 1997 Luxor, Egypt massacre
- The 1998 bombings of the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania
- The 2000 bombing of the U.S.S. Cole

I think that warrants putting him six feet under. As I said, symbolic win. But if it throws a spanner in the works for a while, it's a good thing.

I agree that Osama bin Laden isn't the be all and end all of terrorism, but he did cause a lot of deaths. He may not have killed most of his victims outright, but he was nevertheless responsible.

It'll be interesting to see what happens now.

What I'd argue is that what you're doing there is pinning responsibility of those events directly on Osama, and that killing him is retribution for them. My point is: He's one guy. Al-Queda is a whole shitload of people, and although, yes, Osama was aiding in the funding of those atrocities (Please do not get the impression that I'm playing those down here) taking him out will not have all that much of a lingering effect on these attacks.

I perceive an obsession with one guy trumping concern over the actions of a group of people.

Funny, because that's exactly the impression you're giving off.

It's one guy, yes. But that one guy has been the symbol of global terrorism for almost 2 decades. That one guy is the guy who helped start up al-Qaeda, bankrolled it, and took credit when they blew stuff up.

Will it end al-Qaeda? Of course not. But it will definitely knock them back on their heels, and maybe it'll mean an actual turning point in this whole sorry situation.

Whether bin Laden's death is a turning point or not, I must say I think the world is a better place with him not in it.

It's been on the news all day. It's all they can talk about and it's really getting on my nerves, with America suddenly acting like it's some sort of movie action hero for winning a shootout and killing an old man.

Besides, everybody knows he's been dead for months now anyway.

If they don't shut up about this crap I swear I'm going to punch somebody in the face.
