I see at least five people in this. May I ask which fic spawned the orgy?

I know I'm gonna regret this.

Yes, which means Chocobo just cursed this into existence. You should be ashamed.

Is is wrong that "Gwack" sounds to me like another word for throwing up?

It reminds me of the sound the birds make when both the geese and the ducks decide to be vocal.

No. I thought the same thing the first time I saw it used. Probably because my family's used a vaguely similar word (gack) for throwing up since I was a kid.

I hate smushed pairing names. You can thank that advent of Bennifer(Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez at that time) for starting this annoying trend. The only place you won't seem to find it is in the Ghostbusters fandom. We just list them as Egon/Janine or E/J for short, as an example.

I refuse to use them on principal. I figure if the reader can't function unless the pairing name is smushed together, I don't want them reading my story anyway. Thankfully, Dr. Who is pretty much free of smushed pairing names (except for the unfortunate Drose, which was initially used for Nine/Rose, until Nine regenerated into 10 and they realized you wouldn't be able to tell which Doctor Rose was with), and in Torchwood, they're mostly used for the het pairings. The fandom may have shortened it to Janto, but most authors still write Jack/Ianto in their summaries.

I do kind've wish the Dr. Who fandom had given the metacrisis clone an actual name (John Smith would've worked just fine). Most of the time he's referred to as 10th Doctor Duplicate or 10th Doctor Clone (despite the fact he's not really a clone). I've also seen him referred to as 10.5. Jeez, guys, way to point out to us that he's not the REAL Doctor, he's nothing but the result of the only human/Time Lord biological metacrisis ever known! He's basically a fucking miracle, and the best you can do is 10.5?

Let's fix that!

From now on, Egon/Janine shall be known as "Eganine" or "Jagon".

Great, BLC, curse it into existance. Rolling Eyes

I think it's only escaped, thus far, because it's a smaller, older fandom, and currently dominated by male prop nerds. If they ever make that third movie, though, and the squeeing fanbrats descend on it, watch out.

I've seen a few smushed names in the Titanic fandom, even though the names of most of the characters are five letters or less. The worst of these? Cack (from someone who wrote Cal/Jack slashfic). Cack is the sound my cat makes when he barfs up a hairball.

New rule for fandom names-Any smushed pairing ending in 'ack' is only going to make you look stupid (see Gwack for further reference).

It probably already existed! Don't blame me for HP fandom being so bloody huge that almost anything you can imagine and several things you can't have already been written!

I'd have preferred "Bike". Sounds catchier, somehow.

Oh, and who would say "Spirk" when they can have "Spork"?

Also, I believe that the Draco/Harry shippers called the ship "Drarry". I believe I read that on Fiction Alley, aeons ago.

As stupid as they are, at least they're usually more easy to figure out than whatevershipping-names.

And one advantage of smushed ship names might be that it makes it easier to search for the pairing. I'm not sure how well it works, however.

It sort of depends on the fandom. Torchwood, for instance, was relatively easy because there were only five actual team members-Jack, Ianto, Owen, Toshiko and Gwen. Even if you threw in Gwen's boyfriend (later husband) Rhys; her former partner in the Police Department Andy, and Captain Swanson (the head of the Cardiff Police), you were still fairly limited to the number of possible pairings. And honestly, the only smushed name that really caught on was Janto.

Compare that to Dr. Who, where you've got 11 different Doctors, four different Masters, and, quite literally, hundreds of companions over the years. Plus secondary characters that played major roles and all the Eighth Doctor audio adventures and books(which are considered canon, but which most Americans have never heard or read), and you're looking at literally THOUSANDS of potential pairings. I'm pretty sure that this (and the fact that Who fandom and fanfic dates back to the early 1960s) meant that, even if you could come up with a suitable smushed name for EVERY SINGLE PAIRING, it would require an appendix roughly the size of the Encyclopedia Brittanica to cover all the possible permutations.

Honestly, writing Five/Turlough, or Three/Jo, or Nine/Jack is just easier for everyone.
