I like reading Harry Potter and Buffy fanfiction. However, I can't make it past any story in which the canonical love interest of a popular male character is suddenly:

Dead
Maimed
Bamfed somewhere else...like Oscar's trash can
Diseased
Gone all crazy-like like the dude's wife from Jane Eyre


What are some of the most ridiculous examples of this behavior that you have encountered?

Garrus Vakarian is suddenly a rapist because he wants Commander Shepard to suffer after she stopped him from killing Sedonis. (Mass Effect)

Commander Shepard morphs from a strong, well adjusted woman into an insane, immature, selfish and petulant five year old. (Mass Effect)

Biotics are the Force! (Mass Effect)

Sgt. Slaughter collects Cupie dolls! (G.I. Joe)

The Sten kills for cookies. (Dragon Age)

Alistair is a sex god. (Dragon Age)

Morrigain swings both ways. (Dragon Age)

Metal Gear: Meryl Silverburg is a whiny, selfish bitch who just refused to give Snake space (nevermind the fact that she leaves him over his PTSD in-canon, between games, before any of his Ho Yay with Otacon even starts.)

BlazBlue: Litchi Faye-Ling is a whiny, selfish bitch who can't possibly honestly love her boyfriend to the point where she can grudgingly do questionable things to save his life. Her actions are clearly those of a scatterbrained airhead who gives no thought to the consequences.

- Rachel Alucard is an evil ho who tempts Ragna into being a pedophile so he can't be with his one tru wub, his brother Jin. (This has gotten so bad that non-canon bonus materials like the chibi-style tutorials in the console versions invoke it for laughs left and right.)

- Likewise, Tsubaki Yayoi has absolutely no right to have a crush on Jin, thus distracting him from Ragna. If it wasn't for her, Hakumen (Jin from an alternate timeline) might be a less bitter person.

- In the rare case of an author who does not ship Ragna/Jin, Jin is a selfish ass who throws temper tantrums and falls into literal psychosis when Ragna rejects him for Nu-12 (who dies at the end of the first game anyway) or Noel Vermillion (who is probably going to be Ragna's canon love interest.)

This could be entirely valid with an author who actually has a clue about sex, since men who go for forever and a day before their first time tend to have thought about it so much and take it seriously enough that they want to do more than insert cock and come in five strokes. But it's the difference between "Alistair blew me to the moon and no other sex will ever even get me wet" and "Alistair actually took the time to make sure I was satisfied, which is something many, more experienced, men can't be bothered with."

Japanese Ganbare Goemon fans seem to have the idea that Omitsu's weakness for handsome men translates to BLUH BLUH HUGE SLUT, and that she's a vicious harpy because the manga said so. Damsels in distress like her are hardly looked upon favorably in any case, but it's ridiculous when there's people out there who want her retconned out of the series because she's "useless," and get pissed off when Konami deigns to give her a small fanservicey scene in the pachislot game because "Yae's in charge of the sexy, no exceptions."

The Western fans are actually a calmer bunch, but that's most likely because we hardly have anything Goemon-related over here.
