Given that Elves tended to greatly treasure their children (mostly because they had so few of them), the idea of an elf ever abusing a child is patently ridiculous. | Yeah, now that you mention it, where the hell did that particular idiocy come from? There is nothing whatsoever in the canon--either about elves in general or Thranduil in particular--to support that reading. Whose ass did that trope get pulled out of? | The need to pamper a poor tortured blondey. | Also, it's established in The Hobbit that the Elves of Mirkwood drink wine: fanbrats have used this as a basis for depicting Thranduil as an alcoholic. | But... The Elves of Mirkwood are happy drunks. | In fangirldom all drunks, especially the parental sort, are violently abusive. |

Badfic Rule #33: There is no such thing as social drinking in fandom. Anyone who drinks even the slightest bit turns into a raging, abusive asshole. Especially parents and other authority figures.
Also, all liquor has the same effect. It doesn't matter how small the amount of alcohol involved, something as minor as a few sips of alcopop will turn a normally peaceful person into a violent rapist. |
