| We've all run across them--the obsessive, driven, die-for-our-ship fans. Some of them are funny, some of them are creepy--and then there's some who just make you go WTF?! Currently, the Twilight fandom has the most visible obsessed fantards (you know fans are obsessed when they hassle celebrities off Twitter for not liking their particular ship). Twilight isn't the only one, though--I've seen obsessed fans of Star Wars, Titanic, and such real people as Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers, Hanson, and New Kids on the Block (why, yes, I did grow up in the 80s, though I can't say I was terribly interested in NKOTB). Let's discuss some of the most bizarre, scary, and downright hilarious fan obsessions you've ever come across. |

| Lady Gaga's fans can be downright brutal. If you mention not liking her work, be prepared for "NO UR RONG U JUST DONT UNDERSTAND REEL MUSIK". |

| My sister was a major fan of Hanson back in the 90s. She had a shrine to them in her room, and she would get physically violent with anyone who didn't like them. |

| I've come across several, I won't say obsessive, I'll call them over-enthusiatic, Egon/Janine shippers in the GB/RGB fandom. Over-enthusiastic to the point where if you don't like them together that way, you will be shut-out and regarded as someone who is not a true fan of Ghostbusters or the Real Ghostbusters. The fandom is like high school, with it's own little cliques. You got the E/J shippers, then there's the we-love-the-cartoons-only group, who only consider the cartoons the true canon, and the Movie-purists(they consider the movies to be the true canon). There may be others, but these are the main three I can think of. It's ridiculous, to put it mildly. As for music, I remember somebody in grade 8 saying that anyone didn't like Green Day or Offspring, was retarded. Yeah, okay, that just put me off from liking Green Day's music at that point. Offspring, I already liked one or two of their songs so nothing was wrong there. |

That's just what I was thinking, that was epic to the extreme, and quite scary considering the ages of the women involved.

| Some Kim Possible fans really need to chill and get a little perspective on things. The Ron Stoppable forums, which used to be THE place for KP fans to go to, has been consumed by utter fail from everyone. On one side, you have obsessed fans who're convinced that if they just keep spamming Disney with e-mails, there will be a fifth season. If you disagree with them or criticize their methods, you aren't a real fan. On the other side, you have moderators and their friends who keep trolling the other side for the lulz. All sensible fans have long since left the boards.
There was also one person who suffered from OCD which manifested itself in an obsession for the Kim/Ron pairing and its canon status. The most ridiculous and hateful things I've ever heard in fandom all came from this person, but since his behaviour was explained by his disorder, I'd feel a little bad about making fun of him. He hasn't posted in a long time, so I hope he got help. |

| The Titanic fandom, small though it is in comparison to some larger fandoms, has its share of crazies. One in particular, known as Cherie Hapney, Cynthia Hanson, and InsectLover, has provided me with plenty of lols over the years. This fan is obsessed with the character Fabrizio di Rossi. As one point, she wrote a bio of the character for Wikipedia, changing the canon fate of the character and adding that her (badly written) story about him was the definitive fanfic about the character. After being laughed off Wikipedia, she started harassing fanfic site owners who happened to have a particular story (A Simple Solution) on their sites, which she claimed was "disrespectful" to Fabrizio's character. Several site owners closed their sites down because of her. I refused to close mine down or remove the story, partly because trying to push me into anything just makes me resist all the harder, and partly because I was milking the lols for all they were worth. When I finally ran out of patience with her harassment, I sent her a phony cease and desist e-mail threatening legal action if she contacted me again. I haven't heard from her since. A brief Google search of her names was good for entertainment--Titanic isn't the only fandom this fanbrat is obsessed with. Most loltastic was her fight with other reviewers on Amazon.com over whether Shirley Temple should have been cast in The Wizard of Oz instead of Judy Garland--she became enraged at anyone who disagreed with her that Shirley Temple was better for the role. She also reviewed some of L. Frank Baum's other Oz books, declaring him to be a terrible writer because his portrayal of Mr. Wogglebug in one book was different from her idea of how the character should be portrayed (she calls Mr. Wogglebug her "best friend"). Yeah, this fanbrat has problems. |

| Not to come off as an asshole, but isn't a certain amount of obsessive behaviour common among those involved in fandom? I mean, everyone's a little crazy when it comes to their tv series/video games/movies/books of choice. Okay, now that I'm done being a dick, I have to say that the craziest fandom I was ever involved in personally was InuYasha (when it was still relevant a couple years back). Oh god, especially in the brief period that I was inspired by Resmiranda's fuckin' incredible Sessho-Maru/Kagome fics. Those SessKag shippers are nutty, and I think we all know that I'm referring more to the majority of the fandom that doesn't really think the hows and the whys out enough. Oh yeah and mustn't forget Sueric when talking of obsessive fans in the IY fandom. |

| On the subject of Harry Potter and crazed fans, I suppose this would be a good time to mention Ms. Scribe.
The full story on all of Ms. Scribe's crazy antics is here as it was reported to the internet by Charlotte Lennox. However the short version is that the HP fandom being as big and sprawling as it is, Scribe wanted to become a BNF (a normal enough wish), but wasn't sure she could put in the fandomy work usually required to get there (also a normal enough conclusion). However, rather than give up, like most people would when they reach this point, Scribe launched an epic plan involving multiple sockpuppets, several fandom websites--including LJ and FictionAlley, and spanning several other wankstorms. In fact, if I remember right, Scribe's actions formed a major part of the backdrop for the falling out of several other BNFs with FictionAlley and the subsequent creation of the SugarQuill archive. There may also be some tangential relation to the Cassandra Claire "iPodgate" stuff, although I'm less certain about that part.
However, she did succeed in her goal of becoming a BNF, so there is that. _________________ http://www.abort73.com - My Cause http://bungakertas.dreamwidth.org - My Shiny New DW Fanfic Journal!

What was up with all those Sesshoumaru/Kagome fics anyway? Now, I've read a couple of decent Sesshoumaru/kagome fic, but I find it kinda funny how many, many fics there was where those two got paired up together, compared to, say, Sesshoumaru/Kagura (and there's actually something between those two in canon).
I guess with Kagome being a virginal teenager, fans found her more relateable. |

| Oh man, Ms. Scribe. I was never part of the HP fandom, but I remember being glued to the history of it when Charlotte Lennox started detailing it on Bad Penny. Hot damn that's a long time ago. Have I really been on the Internet that long? |

There's a special sub-set of the fandom that my friends and I refer to as the Cult of St. Kagome... who see her as a perfect figure that can do no wrong, ever. She's also pretty bland, aside from the usual Sue traits: super powerful magic, every guy seems attracted to her, etc. Plus Sesshoumaru is your typical heart-of-ice, ultra-pretty bishounen. It's a toss-up between people pairing them up because they're using Kagome as an author proxy, because both the characters are pretty, because it's a popular pairing and practically guarantees attention, or because (in very, very, very rare cases) they are actually interested in the resulting personality clash. |

Well I know I was temporarily seduced by SessKag due to the influence of an incredibly talented author. It's one of those pairings that is usually hideously bad, chockful of wftucker-y and InuYasha bashing, but when someone does it right.... Well, it can be a thing of beauty.
Kagura was never that popular, for reasons I'd never fully figured out. I suppose because she was the femme fatale archetype in anime. SessKagura shippers were few and far between, even when the character was alive (sorry if anyone's spoiled but it is terribly old news). Or maybe they were just far outweighed by the more classic InuKag romances. |
