| I did happen upon a certain fanfic where some characters had apostrophes in the middle of their names...
This occurs in real life as well. Remember the news story about a group of parents who named their child "Number 17 bus shelter"? |

Makes you wonder what kind of dysfunctional elven couple would give that name to their child. Especially considering elves try their best to avoid namesakes. |

| Honestly, I can't see the point of looking up your character's name in other languages to check if it means something there. I mean, how many languages would you have to check?
Plus there's no telling for slang and so on |

It depends upon the fandom and the language the characters are supposedly speaking. For example, I came across a POTC fic where the Sue had the super speshul sparkly name Puta (there was more to the name, but I don't remember it; that was the part that stood out). This, of course, got lots of reviewers going The angry fanbrat said that it was just a made-up name, just fiction, and anyway nobody spoke Spanish back then (right...nobody spoke Spanish in the Spanish colonies) and how was anybody supposed to know what that word meant in Spanish anyway. This resulted in more reviewers going Then the butthurt fanbrat took the story down.
Yeah...check to see if the name means anything, lest you wind up naming your Les Mis character Chienne Putain Baiser and wondering why people are laughing at you. |

That name's actually kind of fun to say. Like if you were to say it like, "Brindey Lynn Holley Day Carey Elle" But, I mean, it's no Harry Potter name. Harry Potter either has incredibly plain names or... well, I guess I don't know what a "Hermoine" is. Hey guys, is it actually true that she wrote the premise out on restaurant napkins?
You know, I always thought Slade was a really shitty "cool guy" fanfic OC name because I would see it (or at least think that I have seen it on a few occasions back when I was a "not super smelly but wouldn't be surprised if I did have a smell" anime teen reading Pokemon fanfiction) for like these OCs that knew how to do every goddamn little thing, but they would be all like... withdrawn. Like, walk past you with his eyes closed and a sword over his shoulder all like, "How could you understand my past?" BUT! Really funny story, so I work at this place that's sort of a small restaurant chain so I can see the schedule of the other stores... and woe and behold! A fucking dude whose name is SLADE works at one of the stores uptown. I was like, what? No way, really? And it was a TOTAL really, and not only was his name Slade, because I mean I'm already blown away, this guy was an ACTOR. Like, I mean, he was in musicals and could sing and dance and all that shit, so a really impressive guy. HOWEVER, as it turns out, to my retarded astonishment, he's a total optimist and a feel good guy.
Also, on an unrelated note about restaurants, this guy that I wanted to fuck in wind ensemble, I mean he was a really sweet guy that played trumpet and guitar really, really well. Calm too. That is a HUGE quality I go for, I cannot stress this enough. But I totally saw him fr'sure working as a waiter at the Red Robin a few weeks ago. Not that that's a bad thing, I still wait tables while going to school and I mean he might still be going to (community) college, but I mean, one of those guys you thought was going to run with his talent. Really took a lot of the mysticism out of him... which I admit I got a little satisfaction out of it. I did tip really well though to make me feel a little less guilty about what I was thinking. |

Hermione is a regular name, just one that had fallen out of favor in the last few decades. There used to be a couple well-known character actresses named Hermione Baddeley (whom you might remember as the maid in Mary Poppins) and Hermione Gingold (who occasionally played witches). While her parents were muggles, it makes sense that kids from wizarding families would have older names, even ones going back to Greek or Roman antiquity, to show the disconnect between their world and ours. |

Actually Hermione was orginally a figure in Greek mythology. But given that Hermione's parents seem fairly well educated it's not too unlikely a name. |

I know, but I figured the fact that the name was still (somewhat) recently in use was more relevant to the matter at hand. |

| Webcomic person named a character of theirs "Kike" in attempts to... "reclaim" the term.
My favorite is when an OC has the name of a canon character that the creator was obviously familiar with. |

| I ran across a rather unfortunate Doctor Who story the other night where 11 and River Song had a daughter, and named her Melody Amelia Riversong Pond Who. And yes, she was as big a Sue as her name suggests. She also managed to be a full Time Lord, despite my having assumed that River Song's abilities were due to her being conceived on the TARDIS. |

Which is worst?
1) When an OC's name is closely akin to that of a canon character (a Hunchback of Notre Dame OC named Emerald or Sapphire)
2) When an OC's name is identical to that of a character from what the writer apparently thinks is a related fandom (a Hunchback OC named Fantine)
3) When an OC's name is identical to that of a character from a completely unrelated fandom (two Hunchback OCs named Ayla and Creb)

This one, of course. I sporked a Pokémon fanfiction (in Portuguese) that had two characters named Steven. And they were walking around Hoenn, where canon character Steven Stone lives.
The two Stevens, apparently, were based on users from Pokémon messageboards. Which means that both names were probably based on the original Steven. Recursive fail, anyone? |

And it shows...tragically. From Silent Hill Reminiscence: Officer Wheeler.
| Quote: | Upon entering the office, Wheeler faced the man that would be his boss from this day forward, sat at his desk. He was middle-aged, with short black hair, his slightly wrinkled face displaying signals of both age and job weariness. As he acknowledged the rookie's presence, Wheeler stood upright.
"Officer Token Wheeler presenting himself for work, sir." he saluted, in a military way.
[...]
Wheeler's first name, Token, is not confirmed. I made my research and some forums had claimed that it is his name, but so far, no official source has confirmed. I've just decided to use it anyway, as it would be troublesome to refer to him only by his surname, and it was better than inventing some random name. |
I doubt its a troll, and I don't think I have the heart to break it to him myself. Please be gentle. |

| I had given the main of a Star Wars bamf-fic the name of Arizona Skyler as a blantent feminine rippoff of Anakin Skywalker. The fic was sucked into the black hole of the internet when Fandomination.net imploded under the weight of Bagwell's butt-hurt. |
